How to Measure Your Setup
Accurate measurements are essential for calculating the correct FOV. Here's how to get them:
Screen Size
Your monitor's diagonal size is usually listed in the product name (e.g., "27-inch monitor"). Measure from one corner to the opposite corner if you're unsure. This is the diagonal measurement in inches.
Viewing Distance
Measure the distance from your eyes to the center of your monitor screen while in your normal driving position. Use a tape measure and record the value in centimeters. Most sim racers sit between 50-100cm from their screens.
For Triple Monitors
The viewing distance should be measured to the center monitor. All three monitors should be the same size and positioned at equal distances from your eyes for the best results.
Why Correct FOV Matters
Field of View is one of the most important settings for sim racing immersion and performance. An incorrect FOV can hurt your driving in several ways:
- Speed perception: Wrong FOV makes cars appear to move faster or slower than they actually are, affecting your braking points.
- Distance judgment: Incorrect FOV distorts the apparent distance to other cars and corners, leading to misjudged overtakes.
- Motion sickness: A mismatched FOV can cause disorientation and nausea during longer sessions.
- Spatial awareness: Proper FOV helps you better judge car placement through corners and alongside other vehicles.
While a wider FOV lets you see more of the track, it's better to use a mathematically correct FOV and rely on look-around buttons or virtual mirrors for additional visibility.
Triple Screen Setup
Triple monitor setups provide the most immersive flat-screen sim racing experience. Here's how to set them up correctly:
Monitor Angles
The side monitors should be angled inward to face your eyes. Our calculator provides the exact angle based on your screen size and viewing distance. This ensures a seamless, undistorted image across all three screens.
Bezel Compensation
Most games have a bezel correction setting. Measure your bezel width (the frame between screens) and enter it in the game settings to properly align the image across monitors.
Matching Heights
All three monitors should be at the same height and the same distance from your eyes. Use a monitor stand or mount that allows precise adjustments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the correct FOV look so zoomed in?
A mathematically correct FOV shows what you'd actually see from the driver's seat at your viewing distance. Most default FOV settings in games are artificially wide to show more of the car and track. While this looks cinematic, it distorts perception. Give the correct FOV a few sessions to feel natural.
Should I increase FOV to see more of the track?
It's better to use the correct FOV and rely on virtual mirrors, look-around bindings, or TrackIR/VR for additional visibility. Increasing FOV beyond what's mathematically correct will hurt your depth perception and speed judgment.
How do curved monitors affect FOV?
Curved monitors can display a slightly wider FOV naturally because the edges of the screen are closer to your eyes. Our calculator accounts for this with the curve radius setting, giving you an adjusted FOV value.
What's the triple screen angle for?
When using three monitors, the side screens should be angled inward so they face your eyes. The angle we calculate ensures the image across all three screens is geometrically correct, with no distortion at the seams.
Is VR FOV different?
VR headsets handle FOV automatically based on the lens geometry and IPD settings. You typically don't need to manually set FOV in VR - the headset and game handle it for you to match your view correctly.
Use Your FOV Number to Build a Better Simulator
Your calculated FOV is only half the story. Real immersion also depends on monitor size, triple-screen placement, seat position, wheel distance, and pedal ergonomics. If you're shopping for a serious setup, use this number as your baseline and compare systems built around proper geometry.
Sim Coaches turnkey simulators are designed so your display position, seating, and controls work together instead of fighting each other.
